Diabetes is not an incurable disease; the right nutrition and lifestyle can transform your health. Index Medical College Hospital & Research Centre observed World Diabetes Day with a series of awareness and academic activities aimed at promoting healthy living and prevention. The event was jointly organized by the Department of Community Medicine and the Endocrinology Department. The programme featured renowned expert Dr. Zeeshan Ali, Kickstart India Program Specialist from the Physician Committee for Responsible Medicine, Washington DC, who addressed students, faculty members, and healthcare professionals. Dr. Ali highlighted India’s growing diabetes burden, sharing that more than 10 crore people are currently affected. He emphasized that these figures reflect not just medical issues, but the consequences of unhealthy lifestyle habits. Compared to 1990, when infectious diseases were more prominent, today lifestyle disorders such as diabetes, heart diseases, hypertension, and cancer have become critical causes of death due to fast food culture and lack of physical activity.
During the CME session, Dr. Ali stressed that medications alone cannot completely cure diabetes unless accompanied by dietary transformation. He recommended adopting plant-based nutrition as an essential element of lifestyle change. Eliminating paneer, cheese, milk products, eggs, and non-vegetarian food items while increasing consumption of fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and plant sources can significantly reverse or prevent diabetes and other chronic diseases. He encouraged people of all age groups to take control of their food choices before it is too late. The program was graced by Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of Malwanchal University Dr. Sanjeev Narang,Dean Dr. G.S. Patel, Dr. Aarti Sahastrabuddhe, Dr. V.K. Arora, and Dr. Lubna Sheikh, who praised the initiative and emphasized the importance of preventive healthcare.
A parallel seminar was also held at Index Hospital where Dr. Abhyuday Verma addressed participants and highlighted that diabetes is not merely a disease but a serious outcome of unhealthy lifestyle patterns. Lack of exercise, inadequate sleep, stress, and poor diet significantly increase the risk. He urged people to adopt regular physical activities, sufficient rest, and balanced nutrition as key tools in diabetes prevention. The session witnessed active participation from students, medical professionals, and faculty members including Dr. Ajay Gupta, Dr. Anita Date, and Dr. Deepak Dhakad, making the event highly informative and impactful. Index Medical College Hospital & Research Centre remains committed to promoting health awareness through education, research, and community outreach.
